Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), was a philosopher, theologian, paleontologist and geologist who took part in the discovery of Peking Man.

For Teilhard, the most important spiritual fact of our existence is that at every moment you and I are swimming in a divine sea. Fortunately, we can’t be taken out of it. At every moment we are inhaling and exhaling the divine life. In the divine milieu we live and move and have our being. While it is true that God is always “in heaven” (transcendent) and also always “within us” (immanent), the more important fact is that we are always living and moving within the divine milieu.

Teilhard has learned to see not only the outer but also the inner life of things, as if every least thing in front of him has a divine light inside it that makes it glow from within.

You can go through life never noticing this divine milieu. But once you have learned to see its luminosity, your life is enriched and your faith enters a new domain. As you recognize and cooperate with this divine presence, it can transform your earthly pursuits and burdens into efforts that further the growth of the Body of Christ and propel forward the evolving design God has built into creation.
